In the early morning hours of January 17, 2010, deputies responded to 201 Smallwood Road Lot 9, in reference to the shooting death of John D. Smallwood. Mr. Smallwood was found deceased by his roommate, James R. Powers. Smallwood’s death was the result of gunshot wounds to the head.
Mr. Smallwood was well known in the Hubert community and the residents in the area have been supportive concerning the investigation. However; after a lengthy investigation, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office has been unable to make an arrest in this case. With few new leads in the case, many leads having been exhausted and many tips having been followed up on, the investigation still lacks sufficient information and evidence to move forward.
Recently Smallwood’s family announced they are offering a reward in the amount of $1,600.25 for anyone that provides information that leads to the arrest of the person responsible for the death of John D. Smallwood. On December 13, 2017, the Smallwood family presented Crime Stoppers a check to be held for Smallwood’s investigation. In addition to the money the family has raised, Sheriff Miller dedicated an additional $1,000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.
