On July 28, 2013 the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Naval Criminal Investigative Service regarding a possible child abuse case resulting in death. An eleven month old infant was discovered unresponsive with no pulse by EMS who responded to Spring Branch Lane in Maysville, NC on that day. The infant had been under the care of LCpl. Matthew Scott Krause when the incident occurred.
Upon examination at U.S. Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, medical personnel determined that injuries to the infant were not consistent with a fall from his crib as described by Krause, but by Shaken Baby Syndrome. An investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Detective J. Getty and NCIS Special Agents determined that the injuries were inflicted by Matthew Scott Krause and lead to the death of the infant.
Krause appeared in Onslow County Superior Court on June 30, 2015 and pled guilty to one count of Felony Child Abuse Inflicting Serious Physical Injury, (Class C Felony) and one count of Voluntary Manslaughter, (Class D Felony).
Superior Court Judge Charles H. Henry sentenced Krause to the N.C. Department of Corrections for the maximum 6 years for the Class C Felony and the maximum 5.3 years for the Class D Felony, for a total of 11.3 years. Krause is also to pay restitution in the amount of $1,000 toward the funeral expenses for the infant.
