NEW HANOVER COUNTY – When her mother spoke to her on the phone she was home watching television on a Friday night, safe and sound. But 30-year-old Ebonee Spears hasn’t been seen since; that was nine months ago.
Spears had walked into the Wilmington Police Department two hours earlier Jan. 15, tried to make a call at front desk, and left angry.
“She was suffering from some sort of mental illness at the time she was last seen. Missing person was extremely paranoid and acting erratically,” according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.
Spears lives on Brooklyn Lane. She’s 63 to 64 inches tall and weighs 140 to 150 pounds. Authorities believe she was wearing blue jeans, a burgundy or purple sweatshirt, and a pink toboggan. She also had brown Timberland boots. She has a butterfly tattoo on top of right foot and rose on right shoulder.
She worked for a short time in an admin office at UNC-Wilmington.
The SABLE helicopter, WPD’s K-9 Unit and search dogs from Brunswick County scoured the area. Tipsters have led detectives to the airport, courthouse and downtown parking lots. Search areas have included railroad tracks, walking trials and all bodies of water near her home. Six billboards were put up along busy streets in Wilmington. Still nothing.
DNA, dental records and fingerprint information is available.
